When you think velvet, you probably think of royalty (England’s King Richard II decreed that his body be clothed in velvet) or children’s holiday outfits (your mother decreed that you should be clothed in velvet for dinner at grandma’s).
But this year, velvet is being associated with something else: it-girls. From the black velvet shorts Alexa Chung designed for Madewell to Diane Kruger rocking a single-sleeved Chloé jumpsuit, this fabric is no longer reserved for the Royal Family or family obligations (unless you’re Kate Middleton, of course).
